Prayer time calculation methods, explained

A calculation method only changes Fajr and Isha. It sets how far below the horizon the sun must be for each, measured in degrees, and a larger angle means an earlier Fajr and a later Isha. Your madhab setting only changes Asr. Dhuhr and Maghrib are identical under every method, because they are solar noon and sunset.
That one paragraph resolves most confusion about prayer time apps. If your app and your masjid disagree about Fajr, it is the method. If they disagree about Asr, it is the madhab. If they disagree about Maghrib, it is neither, and something else is wrong, usually the location or the time zone.
The angles each method uses

Umm al-Qura is the odd one. Rather than an angle, it puts Isha a fixed 90 minutes after Maghrib, which is why it behaves unlike the others at high latitudes and in high summer: it cannot fail to produce a time, and it does not stretch as the nights get short.
How much difference it makes, in minutes
Angles are abstract, so here is the same day computed six ways. Chicago, June 21 2027, Standard Asr throughout.

So at the June solstice in Chicago, the choice of method spans 45 minutes of Fajr and 43 minutes of Isha. In December the same comparison narrows to about 25 minutes of Fajr and 22 minutes of Isha, because the sun crosses the twilight angles more steeply in winter. The method you pick matters most in summer and least in winter.
Why ISNA is different, and the argument about it
ISNA's 15 degrees is noticeably shallower than the 18 to 19.5 used elsewhere, which gives a later Fajr and an earlier Isha. The practical reason it exists is that at North American latitudes the deeper angles push Fajr very early and Isha very late in summer, to the point where the two prayers crowd out sleep. The counter-argument is that a shallower angle is a departure from the observational basis the others claim.
That is a question of fiqh and it is not ours to settle. The practical guidance is simpler: use the method your local masjid uses, so that your times and the jamaah times agree. If you do not know it, the masjid's own website or printed timetable will usually say, and if it does not, asking is a one-line question.
Asr, and what the madhab setting actually does
Asr is defined by shadow length rather than by a sun angle. In the Standard position, used by the Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools, Asr begins when an object's shadow equals its own length plus its shadow at noon. In the Hanafi position it begins when the shadow equals twice the object's length plus the noon shadow. That single change of multiplier is the whole difference.

This is a much larger effect than the method choice, and it is the single most common reason two people in the same city see different Asr times. It is also the reason the Hanafi setting eases the workday problem slightly in summer and barely at all in winter.
Choosing, in the United States
- Use whatever method your local masjid publishes. Agreement with the community you actually pray with is worth more than any argument about angles.
- If you have no local masjid to match, North America (ISNA) is the common default in the US and Canada, and it is the default in the Mudawem app.
- Set the Asr position to your madhab, or to whatever your family has always used. It moves Asr more than the method choice moves anything.
- If your app still disagrees with the printed timetable by a few minutes after both are set, use a per-prayer minute adjustment to match it. Many masjids round or add a safety margin, and no calculation method reproduces a rounding decision.
- Recheck once after the clocks change, when errors in the time zone rather than the method tend to surface.

When no calculation is possible
Above roughly 48 degrees north there are summer nights when the sun never reaches the required twilight angle, so no true Fajr or Isha exists that day. In the continental United States this affects the far north of Washington, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota and Maine in high summer, and it affects most of Alaska for a much longer stretch. Calculators handle this with an approximation, most commonly by dividing the night into portions, and different apps choose differently. If you are that far north and two apps disagree in June, this is usually why, and the local masjid's ruling is the thing to follow.
Common questions
- What is the difference between the ISNA and Muslim World League calculation methods?
- They use different twilight angles. ISNA uses 15 degrees for both Fajr and Isha; the Muslim World League uses 18 degrees for Fajr and 17 for Isha. The deeper angles give an earlier Fajr and a later Isha. At the June solstice in Chicago the gap is about 29 minutes on Fajr and 19 minutes on Isha; in December it is closer to 17 and 11 minutes.
- Why is my prayer app showing a different time than my masjid?
- Almost always the calculation method or the Asr position. Methods only change Fajr and Isha; the madhab setting only changes Asr. If Dhuhr or Maghrib disagree it is neither of those, and the cause is usually a wrong location or time zone. Many masjids also round their printed times or add a small margin, which no method reproduces, so a per-prayer minute adjustment is the way to match exactly.
- Which calculation method should I use in the United States?

- Do calculation methods change Dhuhr and Maghrib?
- No. Dhuhr is solar noon and Maghrib is sunset, and neither depends on a twilight angle, so every method gives the same time for them at the same location. If those two disagree between apps, the cause is the location, the coordinates or the time zone, not the method.
